Stephen Daisley who is completing his Doctorate in Creative Writing has won the $5000 Glenda Adams Award for New Writing in the NSW Premiers Awards, for his debut novel Traitor .
The EM Forster quotation that prefaces the book is 'I hate the idea of causes, and if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country'. Daisley explores this notion through a story of war and love, patriotism and betrayal, and the internal conflict that a soldier contends with during service and the consequences of his actions post war.
Judges of the Glenda Adams Award describe the novel as “ compelling; an impressive work by this first time author.”
Traitor has also been shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for fiction, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book in South East Asia and Pacific, the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year and the ABIA Newcomer of the Year.
Stephen is currently working on his second novel.
