In a special ocean science series on the ABC Catalyst program Dr Graham Phillips features Professor Carlos Duarte, Director of The University of Western Australia's Oceans Institute , who is leading a modern day voyage to recreate the path sailed by Spanish navigator Alejandro Malaspina more then 200 years ago.
Aboard the science vessel Hesperides Professor Duarte says the aim of the mission is to process the impact of global change on the ocean ecosystem and to explore the biodiversity of the oceans.
The expedition, involving some 400 scientists worldwide, recently undertook research in Australian waters travelling from Fremantle to Sydney and Auckland.
