The University of Western Australia's inaugural Professor of Indian Ocean Studies, Dr Dennis Rumley, has been appointed as Australia's representative on the Indian Ocean Rim Academic Group (IORAG) by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The IORAG is one of three working groups under the 18 member state Indian Ocean Rim-Association for Regional Cooperation.  The Association provides information to help better understand factors affecting trade and investment within the region.

Dr Rumley is a senior honorary research fellow within UWA's School of Social and Cultural Studies and is a member of the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) initiated by researchers at UWA and India's Panjab University to take a leadership role in the Indian Ocean region.

The IORG includes members from around Australia, India and Canada.  It aims to encourage research on geopolitical, economic, socio-cultural, environmental, scientific and technological issues relating to the region.

The group promotes dialogue on the peaceful uses and ecologically sustainable development of maritime resources and initiates informed debate on issues of concern within the region.

Dr Rumley is also Chief Editor of the Journal of the Indian Ocean Region .
