An academic at The University of Western Australia whose research interests include Indian cinema has been recognised ahead of more than 4000 nominees as the 2010 UniJobs Lecturer of the Year.

Dr Shalmalee Palekar has been an Assistant Professor in English and Cultural studies at UWA since 2009 . Her research interests also include South Asian literatures, translation theories and practices and representations of gender and sexuality.

Dr Palekar said the award reflected her genuine love of teaching at all levels.

Dean of the UWA Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Winthrop Professor Krishna Sen said the accolade was well deserved.

"We congratulate Dr Palekar on her wonderful achievement, it's official - we have in our midst, the best teacher of the year," Professor Sen said.

More than 72,000 votes were cast in the national competition run by the Uni Jobs website and co-organised by Campus Daily through a national online poll.
