Art historian Professor Clarissa Ball has been appointed Director of The University of Western Australia's Institute of Advanced Studies from January 2011.

The IAS fosters cross-disciplinary debate and is one of six Australian members of the International Consortium of Humanities Centres and Institutes.

Professor Ball will replace the current Director, Professor Terri-ann White, who was IAS Director for seven years and instrumental in raising the Institute's profile and in attracting world-class speakers and researchers to the University.

Professor Ball was the Dean of UWA's Faculty of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Visual Arts from 2005 to 2009, having previously been the Faculty's Associate Dean for four years.

Professor Ball, who also taught at the University of Leeds, specialises in late 19th century Victorian art and American and British art post 1945.  She is particularly interested in the ways in which art and visual cultures intersect with the colonial projects of 19 th and 20th century imperialism.

Her most recent publication is an essay in An Everyday Transience that considers the late 19 th century work of the Kalgoorlie based photographer John Joseph Dwyer.

Professor White will continue her role as Director of UWA Publishing, where she will now be employed full-time.
