A report documenting ways in which to encourage more philanthropy in WA will be launched at The University of Western Australia's Business School.

Titled " A Rising Tide?  Exploring the Future of Giving in Western Australia" , the research and report was managed by UWA's Emeritus Professor Margaret Seares and developed by project consultant Ms Sally Edwards.

Dr Ken Michael, Governor of Western Australia, will be the Patron of the project.  Vice-patrons will be UWA Chancellor Dr Michael Chaney and business leader and philanthropist Stan Perron.

The project began in 2008 when a group of interested community leaders gathered at UWA to discuss the challenges and opportunities for advancing giving in WA.

The University was awarded a Lotterywest grant to conduct a study on how lasting pro-giving cultural change could be achieved with the purpose of improving community well-being.

"This report is an important piece of work," said Ms Gaye McMath, UWA's Executive Director Finance and Resources.  "As far as we know, no other State has undertaken anything similar."

The report, named for the adage ‘a rising tide lifts all boats', proposes a new not-for-profit, but time-limited entity that would work with existing programs and organisations and optimise cost-effective tools such as online communications.

Chair of the project steering committee, Dr John Poynton, will be a guest speaker at the launch at 6pm today, together with Dr Chaney.
