West Australian industry and the State Government have contributed more than $22 million to a series of research projects that won Federal Government funding in the latest round of linkage grants for The University of Western Australia.

The industry and government support will enable the University to conduct research into a wide range of areas, including agriculture, mining, business and management, education, health and science and the environment.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the University had a strong commitment to working in collaboration with business and industry to deliver benefits for all Western Australians.

"By working in partnership with government, industry and community organisations, we can ensure that our research directly benefits the community," Professor Robson said.  "Their funding support reflects the high value they place on research at The University of Western Australia."

The 22 grants involve more than 50 partner organisations, $12.6 million in Federal funding and $22.2 million in partner organisation funds.

Some of the larger grants include $2.5 million over five years for an Australian Research Council project led by the Director of UWA's Centre for Energy, Winthrop Professor Dongke Zhang .

Professor Zhang and his team aim to develop a secure source of sustainable energy for Australian regional communities which embrace environmentally sustainable and cost-effective approaches to global climate change.  The project will investigate synthetic natural gas and biochar from biomass to provide energy in remote communities, as well as soil carbon sequestration.

The Director of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research , Winthrop Professor Fiona Stanley received $2.5 million over five years in ARC funding to lead research into Aboriginal health and wellbeing.

Winthrop Professor D'Arcy Holman , Chair in Public Health at the UWA School of Population Health , also received $1.2 million from the National Health and Medical Research Council for an intervention trial to redress treatment delay and improve outcomes in rural cancer patients.
