Twenty-four high school students from middle and foreign language schools in China are visiting The University of Western Australia next week.

They are winners of the joint WA-Zhejiang English Language Competition (ELC), a competition in which 300,000 children entered.

The students will tour UWA on Monday 9 August, starting with the Business School.

Zhejiang University and UWA have very strong links in research projects and academic and student exchanges.

The competition was established in 2005, following the signing of the Joint Statement by former Premier Dr Geoff Gallop and former Zhejiang Party Secretary, Mr Xi Jinping (the current Vice President of China).

The purpose of the ELC is to increase the profile of Western Australia amongst Zhejiang's youth.  Each year, the top students are awarded a trip to Western Australia.

The Deputy Premier, Hon Dr Kim Hames, officiated at the ELC awards ceremony in Zhejiang during his June mission to China.

The 24 student winners of the 2010 ELC and their accompanying delegation of six Zhejiang Government officials will be in WA from 2-14 August.

Their WA program will be coordinated by the Department of State Development.
