The University of Western Australia will on Wednesday (March 24) officially launch its Oceans Institute - the State's most significant step toward finding answers to the complex issues that define our coastal and oceanic habitats.

The Oceans Institute brings together all of UWA's marine researchers and existing research strengths in oceanography, ecology, engineering and resource management to allow for larger research programs that address science and resource issues in the Indian and Southern Oceans regions.

Professor S. James (Jim) Gates, a member of US President Barack Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and Federal Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr, will be speakers at the launch.
