The University of Western Australia is host to a public lecture that will revisit and celebrate the ideas and works of WA planning luminaries Professor Gordon Stephenson, Professor George Seddon and Margaret Feilman.

Professor Stephenson helped shape Perth's growth from the 1950s; Professor Seddon, in his book Sense of Place, drew attention to the fragile Swan Coastal Plain in the 1970s; and Margaret Feilman was Perth's first female town-planner and an inaugural Commissioner on the Australian Heritage Commission in 1976.

The lecture will discuss how they informed a ‘respectful' approach to outer suburban development, how we have failed to embrace their ideas, and how we can regain this respectful approach to new suburban developments through the use of planning that incorporates the natural topography and environment.

The Stephenson/Hepburn Annual Oration 2010 will be presented by renowned urban designers Mike Day of Roberts Day and Ludwig Fontalvo-Abello of Studio LFA, Philadelphia.
