On Monday (18 th January 2010) 22 WA high school students will discover what it's really like to be an Architect or Landscape Architect as they complete a Summer Design Studio at The University of Western Australia.

The talented students from Christchurch Grammar School, Australind Senior High School, John XXIII College, Shenton College, Scotch College and St Marys Anglican Girls School will be immersed in the culture and practice of Architecture and Landscape Architecture over a four-day intensive studio.

Under the guidance of UWA Lecturer Sophie Giles, Tutor Kate Sloss and high school teacher Dr Annette Pederson, the students will be involved in photographing, designing, drawing, model making, powder printing, viewing an exhibition and taking part in an architectural design jury session.

Ms Giles says, "This year their project draws on ideas from the Festival of Perth's upcoming exhibition by Jeppe Hein, Appearing Rooms .

"In Hein's exhibition, rooms are created by jets of water shooting into the air and the architecture and vision vanishes as quickly as it appears.

The objective of the Summer Design Studio is for students to redesign an internal space within their own homes to understand concepts of space making; both fixed and ephemeral."

The initiative to create the Summer Design Studio was established four years ago by Dr Pederson and Prof William Taylor from UWA as they saw a need to expose young minds to the professions of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
