A centre for cutting-edge research in mathematics, statistics and computer science has been established at The University of Western Australia.

The Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation (CMSC), in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, will cover group theory, combinatorics and computation.

These areas are linked to the fundamental tools that underpin modern cryptography, which is the basis for secure communication and commerce; optimal designs used in experiments across all of the sciences, in particular agriculture; the development of algorithms that are the key to solving many problems in computer science; as well as core areas of mathematical theory.

"The Centre will place The University of Western Australia at the forefront of international mathematics capability," said Centre Director, Winthrop Professor Cheryl Praeger.

"The name itself is symbolic of the vision we have.  The Centre will provide a focus for areas of mathematics essential to today's world, concentrating on intensive mathematics research and also emphasising mathematical outreach - training young researchers through engagement with high school mathematics teachers and students."

The Centre will actively develop relationships with Australian and international universities and organisations through established and new links.  CMSC will focus on initiating strategic alliances with universities in China, Germany and Belgium.

The Centre's core business will be research and research training through both postgraduate and postdoctoral training.  The Centre will offer world class training at this level, especially targeted towards China and Germany.  CMSC will also enhance the quality of the students' learning experience, with a broader range of supporting disciplines.

The Centre will operate at an internationally competitive level and in a climate of rapid technological advancement and increased competition.
