An international sailing program to be launched today will give more West Australians the opportunity to become involved in one of Australia's more popular sports.

The University of Western Australia International Sailing Program is a collaboration between UWA and partners including the UWA Sport and Recreation Association, the West Australian Yachting Federation, Royal Perth Yacht Club and the State Sailing Centre.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson will launch the program and unveil the name of the University's Foundation 36 yacht, to be used as part of the program.

Professor Robson said UWA's involvement with the International Sailing Program provided yet another opportunity to maintain and further develop international relationships for the benefit of the entire community and State.

"The program will offer a huge range of benefits to students, staff and the wider community.  There will be sailing opportunities for everyone ranging from social sport to match and fleet racing at a State and national level," he said.

"It will also provide opportunities for training pathways, coaches and officials as well as engineering project and event management skills for students."
