Abstract:
Globally, the current trend in oceanography is to emphasise operational oceanography where ocean products, based on near real time data and modelling are provided to users which include those in industry, government agencies and regulatory authorities.
Operational Oceanography is defined in the literature as ‘systematic and long-term routine measurements of the seas and oceans and atmosphere, and their rapid interpretation and dissemination'.

In terms of the atmosphere the weather forecast is the most common operational product that we are mostly familiar with. The ocean operational products may include information on the present state of the sea; forecasts of the ocean conditions as far ahead as possible; and, hindcast assembling long term data sets which will provide data for description of past states, and time series showing trends and changes.

Operational Oceanography proceeds usually, but not always, by the transmission of observational data which can then be combined with a range of other data and model outputs to generate data products, often through intermediary value-adding organisations.

In this presentation, examples of the development of operational oceanographic products from Sri Lanka and south-west Australia will be provided. In Sri Lanka, combination of different remote sensing data sets (sea surface temperature and ocean colour) are used to predict potential fishing zone forecasts which are transmitted to tuna fisherman to target particular regions which have been identified as optimum locations for fish aggregations.

In south western Australia - the deployment of instrumentation as part of the Integrated Marine Observation System (IMOS) provides for the development of a range of operational oceanographic products.
