Among the other fantastic things taking place on Open Day , UWA will be playing host to some special guest speakers who will be talking about a variety of issues including Obama, astronomy and the global financial crisis.

What Difference Does Obama Make?
Presented by Professor Kim Beazley
1.15pm - 2.00pm, Webb Lecture Theatre

Has your opinion of the US, its people and policies changed since Barack Obama came into power? The change in US leadership has brought a change in the world's perspective of the US and its foreign policies, especially toward the Islamic world. Former Labor leader, UWA graduate and Professorial Fellow Kim Beazley will give an interesting presentation that looks at the implications of such policies and the effects they may have on Australia.

Astronomy in the 21st Century with the SKA
Presented by Professor Peter Quinn
12.15pm - 1.00pm, University Club Auditorium

Man has been using telescopes to study the night sky for hundreds of years and in that time huge advances have been made in the technology available and the knowledge gained. We're now at a stage where  viewing the first light from the first star- ‘the dawn of creation'- is a real possibility.

Western Australia is the front runner in an international competition to host the SKA, a new telescope that when completed will be the largest astronomical facility in the world. If you've ever been fascinated by our night sky and the mysteries within it, join Professor Peter Quinn as he takes audience members on a cosmic journey back in time to discover what we have found so far, what mysteries we have uncovered and what we hope to find with the new generation of telescopes we are about to build.

The Global Financial Crisis
Presented by Professor Ken Clements and Professor Ray da Silva Rosa
11.15am-12.00pm, Wesfarmers Lecture Theatre

There has been widespread debate about the impact of the global financial crisis and the effect it has had on local, national and international economies. Is it something that we need to worry about? How will it affect us as individuals in the future?

Two of the UWA Business School's leading experts in their fields, Professor Ken Clements and Professor Raymond da Silva Rosa,  will look at the crisis in more detail, explaining its causes and the effects we can expect to see in the future.
