A stellar field of Australian and international astronomers will deliver a series of free public lectures at The University of Western Australia to celebrate the UN International Year of Astronomy.

The International Year of Astronomy commemorates the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo.

The speakers have been selected by the Astronomical Society of Australia as leaders in their field who are able to communicate the excitement of astronomy to the general public.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009 is a global initiative, instigated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and UNESCO to encourage individuals to consider their place in the Universe and rediscover the wonder in our skies.

Premier's Fellow in Radio Astronomy and UWA Physics Professor Lister Staveley-Smith is convenor of the lecture series, which is supported by The University of Western Australia, Astronomical Society of Australia , Australian Institute of Physics , Curtin University Institute of Theoretical Physics and Scitech .

The lectures will be held over the coming months and detailed information can be found at https://www.ias.uwa.edu.au/lectures/IYA
