The new Science Library building will open at the southern end of campus on 20 July. The Science Library is a planned extension to the existing Biological Sciences Library Building, and was designed by Ferguson Architects.

The services and collections from the Maths and Physical Sciences , Undergraduate Physical Sciences , Geology , Maps , and Biological Sciences Libraries will be combined in one building, offering state of the art facilities.

Almost 1000 seats, 200 PCs, and 17 group study rooms will be provided. This caters for 300 more students than the 5 individual facilities could previously accommodate.

A new multimedia suite, and Western Australia's first Access Grid classroom mean that UWA science and engineering students will have access to cutting edge technology.

The new Science Library will not only be beautiful, but practical and accessible as well.

  • A parents' room will allow those with young children to study in an environment that's safe and inviting, and gives privacy for nursing mothers.
  • The Resource Room will contain specialist equipment and software for people with a disability. The services of a Disability Support Worker will be available for those who need it.
  • Small touches such as height adjustable desks in various public areas of the building cater for a variety of needs.
  • The Guild will run a cafe on the ground floor, and the stunning foyer area is sure to be in demand for receptions and exhibitions.

The new building provides wonderful opportunities to communicate science and particularly to showcase science at UWA. One of the ways in which we would like to do this is to display images of UWA science and engineering research in the new building.
We are seeking contributions of images from UWA scientists that can be enlarged and used to create high quality pictures to be placed on the walls of the new library.

Images need to be of a high quality (300 DPI if possible) and be accompanied by a short description of the image. Your contribution will be acknowledged next to or under the image.

If you have any images you would like to display please contact Magdalena Matuszczyk by Tuesday 14th July.
