Teaching in the laboratory or workshop setting can often become a routine process that does not take full advantage of the opportunities to improve student learning. This workshop will introduce you to strategies to enhance student engagement and communication between teacher and students, making the experience enjoyable and productive for all.

The following teaching issues will be addressed in this workshop:

  • Preparing to teach (workshops/labs)
  • Conducting workshops/labs
  • Engaging students in required tasks
  • Motivating students
  • Managing student conduct in workshops/labs
  • Communicating generally with student
  • Designing assessments
  • Marking student work
  • Providing feedback on student work
  • Meeting with students outside class time
  • Communicating with students electronically

During the workshop participants will:

  • Analyse their experience of teaching in the laboratory setting
  • Determine areas that would benefit from alternative or new approaches
  • Plan some strategies that can be incorporated into their teaching in labs and workshops designed to offer improved student learning and engagement.
