During the last round of Enterprise Bargaining negotiations the University introduced a new type of employment status for eligible research staff. The revised employment status, under the title of ‘ Ongoing Contingent Funded Research Contract ’, is a result of recommendations from the paper ‘Better Supporting Research Staff at UWA’ which can be viewed on the website .

The new status of employment seeks to provide greater job security for research staff and improve conditions of employment. The University recognises the great value of researchers and sees this as a step towards providing better support. The Academic and Professional Staff Agreements provide for Ongoing Contingent Funded Research Contracts for fixed term research staff when they meet the following criteria:

  • are 0.5 FTE or more;
  • have been employed continuously by UWA for a period of 3 years or more and are to be appointed to their second or subsequent consecutive contract; and
  • meet the definition of ‘research active’ as it applies in their Faculty for Academic staff ,or work on a research project for Professional staff.

A list of staff who, based on the Human Resources (HR) database, meet the criteria is in the process of being sent to the Faculty offices. Faculties have been requested to confirm those staff who meet the criteria. Human Resources will then issue a variation of contract to those research staff confirmed as meeting the criteria for conversion.
