The Faculty would like to announce the retirement of Dr Laurence Spencer .
Laurence is one of the longest standing members of the School of Mechanical Engineering.
We would like to wish Laurence and his family all the best for the future.

Having lived and worked in a number of countries including several in the Third World, Dr Spencer's major research interest centres around the issue of Third World poverty, and especially around the problems of providing water and energy supplies in rural areas.

In this context, topics such as appropriate technology, renewable energy in its various forms, and technology transfer figure prominently. To these must be added the social factors which play a major part in the effectiveness of introducing new technologies to improve living conditions. An associated research interest is heat engines, particularly those offering the possibility of filling gaps in the necessary spectrum of machine size, efficiency, and technical sophistication.
