UWA mechanical engineering graduate, Sir Rod Eddington, will become the next Chair of ANZ in the second half of 2009. He is the chair of Infrastructure Australia and a director on the board of News Corporation.

Sue Murphy took up the appointment as Chief Executive of the Western Australian Water Corporation in Perth for a term of three years on 6 November 2008. She was previously General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure at the corporation. Murphy has an honours degree in civil engineering from the UWA.

The UWA Motorsports team recently won 2nd place in the formula SAE Australasia competition in Werribee, Victoria. The winners were from the University of Stuttgart. This second place achievement adds to the team’s list of successes at the Australasia competition including: Championship in 2007, 2nd place in 2006, 3rd place in 2004 and 2nd place in 2002. Darren Lomman has been named Young Mechanical Engineer of the Year by Engineers Australia’s College of Mechanical Engineers. The award recognises Lomman’s achievement as CEO of the Dreamfit Foundation where, he uses his mechanical engineering skills to develop technologies that can be used to modify recreation equipment for use by people with disabilities. Professor Yves Potvin, Director of the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), was named the 2008 Western Australian Inventor of the Year – Ready to Market category, for his High Energy Absorption (HEA) Mesh, which is designed to absorb seismic event energy in underground mining and improve surface support technology over existing rock. HEA mesh is a “specialty” mining surface support product designed to cater for extreme ground conditions such as high energy seismic events and squeezing ground. ACG continues to be a pioneering force in providing the mining industry with world-class geotechnical research. Outcomes of its projects are utilised to promote safer mining practices, operating efficiencies and meet community expectations for sustainable development.
