The UWA Centre for Software Practice has won the Regional Category of the 2008 WA Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards for the Great Southern Managed Health Network (GSMHN) project.

Funded by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing, the GSMHN project has been delivering web-based clinical management systems, shared electronic health records and secure communications to health professionals in rural WA for the past 18 months.

The initiative has involved partnerships with GP Networks, in particular the Great Southern GP Network and Kimberley Division of General Practice, WA Country Health Services, the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council and other organisations and private health professionals.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said it was pleasing to see the project recognised through the WA Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards.

"As a result of this project, GPs, specialists, hospitals, aged-care providers and allied health providers are now connected through shared electronic health records, secure communication and remote administration of health and medicine," Professor Robson said.

Dr David Glance, Director of the Centre for Software Practice, said that WA was rapidly becoming a leader in providing an e-Health infrastructure in Australia that would bring long-lasting health outcomes for patients, especially in rural and indigenous communities.

The UWA Centre for Software Practice was established as a UWA research centre in 2006 and has been responsible for the development of software systems, professional training of UWA students and the establishment and running of the GSMHN as a not-for-profit collaboration with health organisations across WA.
