The Facullty is delighted to announce that Dr Debbie Thackray has been appointed 0.5FTE as the Research Development Officer (RDO) for FECM.

Debbie has been a UWA employee since 1993 and a UWA RDO working in many areas across the University since May 2007. Her new role, in consultation with the Dean and Associate Dean Research, is to work with FECM researchers and their collaborators to enhance research funding success. This includes providing strategic advice to researchers on finding and applying for research funding, assisting with the establishment of research collaborations within and outside UWA, facilitating cross-disciplinary communication and establishing and nurturing partnerships with government and private industry. She won’t know all the answers, but she will work with researchers and their partners towards finding them!  And she has some great back up from the rest of the Research Development Office, Research Services, Office of Industry and Innovation, Development Office and Faculty staff with whom she liaises.

Debbie has 16 years post-doctoral experience in research, development and extension in the UK and in Australia, both in academia and industry.  Her research background is in biology and agriculture, including pest and disease control, plant resistance, and simulation modelling.  She has many year’s experience in extension of research to stakeholders including funding bodies, other investors, outcome users and the general public, and she is an active member of Australian Science Communicators.

Debbie’s industry experience includes 2 years in an Agrochemical Evaluation Unit, 4 years as a private crop consultant in the UK and 9 year’s in research at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA, whilst employed by UWA through the Cooperative Research Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture (CLIMA). More recently she was Communications Manager for CLIMA for 5 years, based at UWA.
