The Vice-Chancellor's cricket XI was knocked for six by John Inverarity XI players including former Western Australian batsman Ryan Campbell at James Oval yesterday as The University of Western Australia's First Grade team fought hard to claim the 2009 John Inverarity Cup.

But the visitors claimed victory over the home side in the Twenty/20 match once again - the Inverarity XI reclaiming the cup, scoring 7/171 to the Vice-Chancellor's XI 8/148.

Top scorers for the Inverarity XI were UWA Cricket Club member Michael Innes who hit 67 and David Irvine who contributed 43. Peter Mizza was the pick of the VC XI bowlers, taking two for 30 off three overs while best performers with the bat for the VC XI were Brad Knowles with 46 and Patrick Molinari with 30. Chris Lagana from the Inverarity XI stood out among the bowlers with four for 24 off four overs and man of the match went to Michael Innes.

The competition began in 2001 when it was endorsed by then Premier Geoff Gallop and known as the Premier's Cup. The competition changed to the Twenty/20 format in 2005.

The Vice-Chancellor's XI, captained this year by UWA Cricket Club Captain, UWA Graduate and former Western Warriors Squad member, Andrew James, included members of UWA's First Grade team while the John Inverarity XI was made up of current and former WA state and Australian players.

The John Inverarity Cup's list of previous players includes Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges, Geoff Lawson, Shoaib Akhter and Zoe Goss.

In the six years the Vice-Chancellor's XI has played against the visiting XI the home side has taken the cup just once - in 2004.
