Leading Western Australian judge Robert French is one of the distinguished speakers at the 2009 Law Summer School to be held at The University of Western Australia this Friday, February 20.

Justice French, who was named Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia in July, will join some of Australia's foremost legal minds during the summer school, which aims to encourage vigorous debate on issues and topics affecting their profession.

The first West Australian to be appointed to this position, Justice French completed his science degree at UWA in 1968, majoring in physics, and finished his law degree in 1971. He was president of the University's Liberal Club and later tutored in constitutional law at the University.

Fellow UWA graduates Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, Justice Wayne Martin, and State Attorney-General, Christian Porter MLA, will also speak at the Law Summer School.

Society President, Dudley Stow, said the gathering would be a ‘who's who' of the legal world. "The Law Summer School is a key event on the legal calendar, allowing practitioners to develop their skills and gain vital industry knowledge," he said.

"Our speakers, among them some of the most senior of the profession, are donating their time free - such is the culture to give back to our members and the priority shown to the Continued Professional Development (CPD) of practitioners in this State."

The Law Summer School is presented by UWA and The Law Society of Western Australia as part of their long-standing partnership. The first Law Summer School was held in 1961 and was an annual fixture for about 30 years.

Media are welcome at The University Club at breakfast (8am to 9am), lunch (1pm to 1.45pm) and after-event drinks (5pm to 6pm).
