The University of Western Australia will receive $3.9 million in recognition of its achievements in excellence in learning and teaching as part of the Australian Government's 2009 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund.

Per capita, UWA's funding is among the highest in Australia and the University was recognised as being in among the top levels for teaching and learning in several disciplines.

Per student, UWA received the highest funding of all universities in Australia.

The expert panel singled out UWA for an honourable mention; alongside The University of New South Wales, Australian National University, University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Wollongong, UWA was recognised as "excellent" in its teaching performance.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Robson said the level of funding reflected the University's commitment to providing a learning and teaching environment that aimed to achieve international excellence.

"For almost a century, this University has been a valuable resource to the community. Our ambitious aim to be among the world's top 50 universities within the next half century can only be furthered by the Federal Government's award of almost $4 million," Professor Robson said.

"Our commitment to improving the student experience is reflected in the funding and we are committed to continuing that improvement - including through the implementation of our two-year review of course structures."

The funding was divided into categories - ‘Excellence' and ‘Improvement' - and UWA received more than $2.7m for the former and almost $1.2m for the latter.

UWA was one of 32 Australian universities to share more than $73.14 million, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Julia Gillard, announced yesterday.
