The University of Western Australia honoured its sporting student athletes, stars, clubs and volunteers at the annual UWA Sports Awards Night on 30 October, with rower and recent graduate Perry Ward named 2014 Sports Star of the Year.

Some of Perry's most notable achievements for 2014 include the being named Australia's fastest and the world's 5 th fastest lightweight single sculler, after receiving gold at the Australian National Rowing Championships and Commonwealth Rowing Championship, and graduating with a Bachelor of Science.

Previous Sports Star of the Year recipients include Ric Charlesworth in 1972 and 1973 (cricket and hockey), John Inverarity in 1965 and 1966 (cricket), Richard Pengelley in 1979 (water polo).

Also honoured at last night's award ceremony were UWA student sailors who were inducted on to the Australian University Sport (AUS) Honour Roll and awarded AUS Team of the Year, while skipper Samuel Gilmour was presented with AUS Athlete of the Year, for their silver medal at the 2014 World University Match Racing Championship earlier in the year. With outstanding achievements in 2014 for many UWA affiliated sporting clubs, the honour of Champion Club for 2014 went to the UWA Boat Club after winning Champion WA Rowing Club, the overall WA Rowing pennant, as well as A, B and C grade pennants.

Coach of the Year was awarded to Suzanne Tiverios who led women's first grade hockey to their third consecutive finals and brought home gold this year, and for her dedication and commitment to the UWA Hockey Club, and had previously represented Australia.

Club Letters, the highest tribute the University can pay to non-students, were presented to Adam Feilding (UWA Boat Club), Julie Waddell (UWA Hockey Club) and Rohan Wilson (UWA Hockey Club) for their service to their clubs over the past seven years.

UWA student Brenden Koh received a Club Service award, having demonstrated at least three years of service to the UWA Triathlon Club.

While no prestigious University Full Blues honours were awarded this year, 11 student athletes were awarded Half Blues for their sporting achievements in 2014 including: Thomas Kozak (UWA Athletics Club); James Kerr (UWA Boat Club); Caitlin Rooker (UWA Baseball and Softball Club); Sebastian Ashford (UWA Football Club); Harrison Scoble (UWA Rugby Club); Corey Thomas (UWA Rugby Club); Brenden Koh (UWA Triathlon Club); and Kirsten Chick, Jeremy Ha, Maxin Qua and Curtis Dickson (UWA Ultimate Club).

After the success of the UWA Western Waagyls at the 2014 National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games, held in Perth in September, Most Valuable Player awards were presented to Jeffery Fong and Zanamarica Bodey.

The University of Western Australia was awarded the Tertiary Sports Western Australia Overall Champions University for the 15 th consecutive year after defeating the second placed WA university by 19 points.

Guest speaker for the night was UWA alumnus Adam Lucas who inspired attendees with his personal story of balancing study with his achievements in the pool at the Olympics and Commonwealth games.
