Careers and Employability Award: submit your student programs

The new Careers and Employability Award launches next month and aims to help students prepare for a successful career pathway. To achieve the Award, students must complete EMPLOY101 online career development modules and a diverse range of experiences which enable them to articulate their employability, attributes and skills to potential employers. The Award will improve the student experience and enhance UWA's reputation for producing high-quality graduates.

Christmas closedown period 2018/2019

Dear Colleagues
As you are aware the University typically has a closedown period over the Christmas and New Year holidays.  This is an opportunity for staff to take a well-earned break and spend time with friends and family.

This year, the University Executive has decided to extend the closedown period by two days to provide a full two week break. Accordingly, the last working day will be Friday, 21 December 2018 and staff will return to work on Monday, 7 January 2019.

The School Partnerships Coordinator in UWA’s Equity Outreach team loves how her job inspires students who didn’t think that UWA was within their reach.

UWA Professors elected Fellows of the Association for Psychological Science

Congratulations to Professor Romola Bucks (Head of School, Psychological Science) and Professor Johanna Badcock (Senior Principal Research Fellow, Centre for Clinical Research in Neuropsychiatry and Research Director, Perth Voices Clinic), for being elected Fellows of the Association for Psychological Science. Fellows were elected for their “sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or application”.

UWA-led Network receives $23.8m in federal funding

Last month the Population Health Research Network (PHRN) was awarded $23.8 million in federal funding to maintain the national infrastructure that enables linked data from around Australia to be made available for research.

The funding provided through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy, was announced by the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Simon Birmingham, and will be administered through UWA, as the agency with overall responsibility for PHRN.

Meet our Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Biggs; be amazed at the history of Winthrop Hall; touch a meteorite, have a tour of the Geology museum, purchase rocks that are millions of years old, tour the newly-refurbished Reid Library; hug a tree that is more than 660 years old; see a fascinating science experiment and a host of other extras.

A self-proclaimed ‘serial volunteer’, Fadzi Whande, UWA's Inclusion and Diversity Manager spends as much time volunteering as she does working. A single mum to two boys, she has also instilled her love of volunteering in them.

Six months after joining the United Nations Association of Western Australia, Fadzi became the head of the National Human Rights Program, a voluntary position she holds as well as her full-time position at UWA.

“I’m driven by a sense of always wanting to give back to the community and leaving the world in a better place than I found it.”
