Recruitment to the role of Director, Strategy, Planning and Performance (SPP) has been deferred until new SDVC, Professor Simon Biggs commences at the University.  Jessica Thomas will continue as Acting Director having done a great job since July delivering, amongst other things, the 2018 IPE.  Jessica’s continuation as Acting Director will assist Professor Biggs’ transition into the SDVC role and timing of formal recruitment to Director, SPP will be determined by the SDVC.

Getting smart about cyber attacks

UWA students put their hacking skills to the test in a capture the flag competition, part of a wider cyber security event hosted by the University and the IT industry earlier this month.

The event aimed to showcase WA’s developing cyber security talent in front of industry partners searching for these skills and encourage those with an interest in the area to investigate possible career paths.

University IT Associate Director, Lee Patterson says the event was one way the industry is trying to stem the flow of security skills heading out of WA.

Appointment of new Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education)

Dr Peter Dean has been appointed the next Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) of The University of Western Australia. He was selected from a competitive field of applicants after an international search and will take up the position in February 2018.

Earlier this year the Vice-Chancellor set out the 2017 priorities for the University. These included enhancing the quality of teaching and the student experience to further deliver on our commitment to providing a world-class education. The introduction of the UWA Courses framework in 2012 explicitly intended to foster research-informed teaching and embed the learning of research skills in all majors and courses.

We are pleased to congratulate Professor Grady Venville, Dean of Coursework Studies, who has recently been appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the Australian National University. After a period of long service leave in early 2018, Grady will commence at ANU on Monday 2nd April 2018.  Grady was appointed as UWA’s inaugural Professor of Science Education in 2007 and the inaugural Dean of Coursework Studies in 2013.

Winners of ORCID iD Competition

During November, the University Library ran a promotion encouraging UWA researchers to get an ORCID iD and register it in the Research Repository.

ORCID® provides researchers with a globally unique iD that can be used throughout their scholarly career. In an international research environment, an ORCID distinguishes research outputs from those of other researchers to ensure consistent, reliable attribution and accurate measurement of research impact. 

UWA teams fast-tracked in CSIRO’s Accelerate Program

Two UWA teams have been fast-tracked as part of the prestigious CSIRO’s ON Accelerate program for scientific inventions to detect muscle health for elite athletes and gut health.   

The program brings together the experience and expertise of established researchers, entrepreneurs and inspiring mentors, through a structured program that helps scientists turn their ground-breaking research into real-world solutions.

Phil Watson has never been one to shy away from a challenge. Over his 20 year career he has worked in most continents and tackled a wide range of engineering projects, from Africa and the Middle East, to the United States and Europe. 

Now UWA’s Shell Chair, Phil is working to strengthen research and industry collaboration in WA’s offshore petroleum industry – not bad for a country kid who grew up running barefoot in Western Australia’s dusty red north.

The Fair Work Commission has approved The University of Western Australia Professional and General Employees Agreement 2017. It will come into effect on Thursday, 7 December.

This represents a significant achievement for the University as we move forward with employment conditions that are simple, contemporary and fair.  This is a testament to the work that has been done to modernise process and procedure while also providing fair and equitable outcomes that reward employees for their contributions to the University.

Visitors Information Centre closed for refurbishment

As part of redevelopment works designed to create a collaborative space for the University, industry and wider community, the Visitors Information Centre is being refurbished.  This work commenced on Monday and the building will re-open in its new capacity in the first part of 2018.
