Dictators, from the Roman general Sulla to Adolf Hitler and beyond, will be the subject of an exciting new series of free public lectures at The University Western Australia during August, September and October 2007.

Beginning on August 1, the series will focus on historical and contemporary dictators, including Sulla, Franco, Hitler and Stalin, along with African dictators and figures in modern fantasy literature.

A number of distinguished international and UWA scholars from the disciplines of History, Literature, Political Science, European, Latin American and African Studies will present the lectures.

The aim is to open the evening lectures to a wide public audience interested in political and social movements, the methodologies of dictatorships and their repercussions. The program follows last year’s successful lecture series on terrorism presented by The Institute of Advanced Studies and the History Discipline at The University of Western Australia.

The lectures will be held every Wednesday evening at 6pm in UWA’s Geography Lecture Theatre 1, starting on August 1, 2007. The series opens with Roman scholar, Dr Alexander Thein of University College Dublin, presenting his lecture, Sulla and the nature of the classical dictator. He will be followed, on Wednesday 8 August, by Nick Atkin, Professor in Modern European History at Reading University, whose subject is The Nearly Men: France and its Caesars since Napoleon I.
