The use and application of light in medical diagnosis and treatment will be the subject of a free public lecture at The University of Western Australia next week.

Professor Brian C Wilson, Head of Biophysics and Bioimaging at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Canada, will present his lecture, ‘Biophotonics:  Bringing Light to Life' on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at 6pm in UWA's Geography Lecture Theatre 1.

"Light has special properties that make it a uniquely useful tool in the life sciences, with a wide scale of applications from early detection and treatment of cancer, to tracking stem cells, and to non-invasive measures of brain activity," Professor Wilson said.

Professor-at-Large for 2008 at UWA's Institute of Advanced Studies, Professor Wilson is also director of a research program in biophotonics that includes development of light-based techniques for clinical therapeutics, clinical diagnostics and micro-imaging.

In the past few years, with national and international collaborators, Professor Wilson has initiated research in nanotechnologies, with a focus on the use of targeted nano-particles for cancer imaging and treatment.

The developments of these techniques have been enabled by an explosive expansion of photonic (optical) technologies from fields as diverse as telecommunications and remote sensing.
