The University of Western Australia has a continual roll call of awards, scholarships and prizes presented to staff and students.

Name: Dr Tomas Corcoran, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
Achievement: Dr Corcoran was recently awarded funding of $2.1 million in a joint project with Monash University to study the long-term outcomes of Lidocaine infusions to reduce persistent pain after breast surgery.

Name: Golam Taki and Thiaggo de Castro Tayer
Achievement: Golam Taki and Thiaggo de Castro Tayer have been awarded prestigious Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering PhD scholarships. The scholarships are worth $7500 per year in the form of a top-up stipend, plus travel and accommodation to work with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.

Name: UWA medical students
Achievement: The artistic talent of UWA medical students was recognised at the 2020 WAMSS Elective Photography Competition. A student-led initiative, the competition and Alan Charters presentation highlight the experience of medical students who travel to complete a clinical placement in a very different environment to Perth. It allows students to display artistic talent and to highlight important global health and sociocultural issues encountered on their placement.

  • 1st Prize was awarded to Caleb Kim who recounted his journey on the back of a ute through communities impacted by tribal warfare in Papua New Guinea.
  • 2nd Prize was awarded to Kate Maddams who shared the story of a young boy who came to clinic in rural Malawi alonge due to the stigma his family was facing.
  • 3rd Prize Saiuj Bhat who described the challenges society in Boston faced around the hospital.

Caleb also took out the AMBOSS WAMSS Committee Prize for best photograph, and the People’s Choice Awards were won by Christopher Ng and Saish Neppalli (Runner Up). All photographs by UWA medical students are available on the WAMSS page.
