The UWA Law School and the Law Society of WA, with the support of the WA community, held a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) fundraiser at the University Club of Western Australia on Thursday 30 January to raise money for the Australian Red Cross' bushfire efforts.

Over 220 attendees and donors from the Perth legal and wider community contributed more than $7,600 to the Australian Red Cross’s bushfire appeal through this event.

“Like so many other Australians, my heart went out to the victims of the bushfires and I wanted to do something to help them.” said Dr Marilyn Bromberg , who curated the event.

“Curating a fundraiser to raise money for the Australian Red Cross bushfire relief seemed like the most practical way that I could help. I am very grateful and proud that the WA legal community gave the event such tremendous support.”

Professor Robyn Carroll from the UWA Law School welcomed attendees and the two speakers. The Honourable Robert French AC , Chancellor, alumnus and Law School Adjunct Professor, made opening remarks about climate change litigation and climate change law expert Associate Professor David Hodgkinson delivered the lecture, providing background to climate change law and policy in Australia over recent decades. He discussed current efforts to establish regulatory mechanisms to address climate change and examined the relationship between climate change and the recent Australian bushfires.

Following an informative Q&A the President of the Law Society of WA Nicholas van Hattem thanked the organisers, speakers, donors and the many WA law associations who supported the event.
