Professor Jon Watson, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London, has been appointed as the Executive Dean, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at The University of Western Australia. The Faculty’s clinical medicine discipline is ranked in the world’s top ten.

After practising as a gastroenterologist and physician in Ballarat, Newcastle and Geelong, Professor Watson was appointed as Clinical School Director for Deakin University’s School of Medicine in 2011, and Dean and Professor of Medicine at Deakin in 2014.

Professor Watson has served as a Board Director for the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria and as Board Chair of the National Centre for Farmer Health in Hamilton, Victoria. He is also a member of the National Examining Panel of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in medicine from Cambridge University, Professor Watson did clinical studies at Oxford. He trained as a specialist in Newcastle upon Tyne and was awarded a PhD for his studies into liver disease. Professor Watson has maintained an active research interest in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) related liver disease, and continues to publish on HCV.

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater welcomed the appointment.

“Since becoming Dean of Medicine at Deakin, Professor Watson has added great depth, and succeeded in attracting post-graduates from all over Australia,” Professor Freshwater said.

“We look forward to the contributions he can make to the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.”

Professor Watson said he was delighted to be appointed to the role of Executive Dean at UWA.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and with people across the University, to continue to develop and deliver world-class research and teaching which will benefit the future health of Australian and international communities,” Professor Watson said.

Professor Watson will commence his role in February 2020.
