It has been a World University Games to remember for the student athletes representing Australia in Napoli, with podium finishes and senior debuts capping off two weeks of competition.

UWA West Coast Swimmer Ashton Brinkworth was once again a star in the pool, with the young athlete continuing on his domestic success.

Highlights for Ashton included finishing eighth in both the 4x100 Relay and 4x100 Medley, but his best achievement was bronze in the 4x200m Relay.

Ashton and the Australian team finished in a time of 7:14.75, just over Russia and France, with USA winning gold, and hosts Italy winning silver.

Elsewhere, Ashton also finished ninth in the 100m semi-finals, missing out on a final berth by just 0.15 seconds.

In the men’s pole vault, student athlete Stephen Clough made it through to the men’s final, recording 5.25m to sail through the qualification.

Stephen finished the final in eleventh place, recording 5.06m to match his WAIS training partner Angus Armstrong.

Fellow UWA Athletics Club athlete Grant Szalek enjoyed his Australian senior debut, making the high jump finals with a strong qualification jump.

Grant matched his jump of 2.15m in the qualifications, reaching the same height in the final to finish ninth.

Racewalker Declan Tingay is no stranger to international competition, but found himself one of three athletes to be disqualified; a disappointing end as he went into the race as one of the strongest competitors.

For many athletes, the World University Games will prove an important stepping stone to future Olympic Games.

The World University Games is one of the most widely attended multi-sport events, and attracts fierce competition, held every two years, with the next event set to be held in Chengdu, China, in 2021.
