The UWA Microelectronics Research Group (MRG) has received a combined $9 million in new funding, enabling this flagship laboratory to expand its capabilities in the field of Infrared Technologies and Micro-electromechanical Systems.

The new funding will be supplied from 3 bodies, comprising capital and operational grants– National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) via the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF) including the Commonwealth’s Research Infrastructure Investment Plan (RIIP) ($1.9 million capex, $3.4 million opex), WA State Government ($2.09 capex) and UWA ($1.9 capex and opex).

With the funding agreement to continue until 2023, plans have been laid for a modern suite of equipment in support of advanced fabrication and manufacturing capabilities.

“With the new funds, in addition to pure research we will be able to support the development of new technologies underpinning the creation of new companies and high-tech industry. Establishment of the state-of-art facilities will enable research training providing new skilled workforce relevant to the industries and economies of the future,” stated Associate Professor Mariusz Martyniuk, Facility Manager.

The impact of these new technologies will extend far beyond UWA and local researchers. MRG forms the WA Node of the ANFF and shares its unique facilities contributing to cross-institutional research.

ANFF provides researchers and industry with access to state-of-the-art fabrication capabilities through a network of 21 institutions throughout Australia, supporting open access to over 500 instruments and enabling interdisciplinary research in fields including sensors and medical devices, micro and nano electronics, advanced materials and microfluidics.

Over the last year alone, ANFF-WA was accessed by over 156 users, supporting nearly 20,000 hours of research, including over 6,000 hours relating to industry.

With exciting collaborations currently underway in Australian space, defence and quantum computing sectors, continued investment in modern equipment and research infrastructure means that MRG at UWA in Western Australia will remain at the forefront of international excellence.
