The Australian Selection Trials in Brisbane proved a strong week of competition, with fierce rivalry to secure spots on the team headed to South Korea for the FINA World Championships.

A selection of UWA West Coast Swimming Club’s top athletes travelled for the event, facing up against national stars such as Emma McKeon, Kyle Chalmers, and Emily Seebohm.

UWA West Coast swimmer Brianna Throssell started the competition in the best way possible, finishing a fraction of a second behind Emma McKeon in the 100m Fly to secure silver and a place on the Australian team.

Brianna followed up in the 200m Fly, going one step better to secure gold and the sole qualifying spot.

Elsewhere, Brianna also finished fourth in the women’s 200m free final and sixth in the 100m free finale, leaving her eligible as a relay swimmer at next month’s championships.

Fellow UWA West Coast star Blair Evans recorded strong results in her pet events, the 200m and 400m Individual Medleys, finishing second and first respectively, but frustratingly missing out on the qualifying times.

It was a similar story for Grant Irvine, new to the club and recently back from injury, who finished second and third in the 200m and 100m Fly respectively, coming close to qualifying times.

There was also exciting progress for UWA’s younger swimmers, with student athlete Ashton Brinkworth finishing eighth in the 100m Free and sixth in the 50m Free.

Fellow club member Jonte Blake won bronze in the 50m Free behind Dolphins swimmers Kyle Chalmers and Cam McEvoy.

Australia will send a smaller squad to South Korea than previous tournaments, with the team targeting peak performance.

42 gold medals are up for grabs, with 20 each for men’s and women’s events, and a further two available via the mixed 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays.
