Thanks to the generosity of Great Southern donors, UWA Albany was able to award nine scholarships and prizes in first semester.  The University of Western Australia is proud of the high calibre of students that applied for the scholarships and is grateful to all the sponsors and donors who support the teaching, learning and research at the university.

Mikaela Forward was successful in being awarded the Clive Malcolm Memorial Sustainability Scholarship. This scholarship was established in honour of Clive Malcolm who, through his work within the Denmark community, Western Australia and with UWA, was committed to a sustainable environment, community and economy. The scholarship was established to encourage and assist a student to study a degree course at UWA Albany in a field relevant to the challenge of sustainability for their community.

With a passion for the marine and conservation biology, Ms Forward started a Science degree as a mature-aged student. Having had a successful career as a hairdresser for six years, it took courage to invest time, hard work and finance into her degree.

“It’s the best choice I’ve ever made. Currently I see myself being hands on in a conservation environment and educating people on real issues on the side. I also enjoy the research part of my degree, therefore I could be persuaded in that area further on. The options are relatively endless at this point as I’m also drawn to shark research and palaeontology,” she said.

“I am so grateful. My scholarship will help financially, however it is a beautiful thing to know that someone you have never met would like to invest in your future”.
