Dear Colleagues

It is my pleasure to announce that Professor Peter Veth has been appointed as the new Director of the UWA Oceans Institute starting in early 2019.

Peter finishes his highly successful tenure as the inaugural Kimberley Foundation Ian Potter Chair in Rock Art. As one of Australia’s leading archaeologists he has established an international reputation for the study of maritime societies. This has included research on Barrow Island dating the oldest known Aboriginal coastal occupation through to leading the Australian Historic Shipwreck Preservation Project. Peter is currently active on four multi-disciplinary ARC projects, serves as Section Head on the Australian Academy of Humanities and sits on the ARC College of Experts. He has received six awards for research excellence including in 2014 The Rhys Jones Medal
