With the 2017 Australian Hockey League (AHL) now on the horizon, the Thundersticks (Men’s) and Diamonds (Women’s) are ready as the first round of fixtures hit on Thursday 28 September.

The Thundersticks will play host to the Northern Territory Stingers, whilst the Diamonds are up against the Canberra Strikers on the first game of the season.

Both teams see the inclusion of UWA Hockey Club players, which is a further boost for the club after the men’s team won the recent Premier League Grand Final.

The women’s squad includes UWA student and UWA Hockey Club player Phillipa Morgan, who plays for the women’s premier 1s.

Phillipa is a midfield player who has long been a member of the UWA team, as well as recently being selected to the national development squad for 2017. Phillipa also features in the UWA Student Athlete Development Program alongside Hockeyroo Georgia Wilson.

Following their success in the state league, four UWA Hockey Club men’s players have been rewarded with call ups to the Thundersticks. Coby Green and Frazer Gerrard are both UWA students who have featured in the Kookaburras National Junior Squad.

Coby studies Physiology and is in his first year with UWA Hockey, after coming from Bunbury. Aged 18, he has a bright future ahead of him and is strong on the ball.

Meanwhile Frazer, 20, is a composed defender with previous Thundersticks experience, and is studying Commerce at UWA. Frazer also won the Best and Fairest Award at the WA Grand Final.

James Royce and Frank Main have also been included in the Thundersticks squad. James is a midfield player, originally from England, who is adept in playing across the turf. Frank is a UWA Law student who plays as a striker.
