Final year Arts student, Horace Hill, took up the opportunity of a study abroad experience through UWA’s Global Learning Studio, offered by the Australian Consortium for “in-country” Indonesian Studies. The West Java Field Studies Program is held at the Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung, West Java.

During his studies at UWA, Horace has had opportunities to experience other cultures and develop leadership skills. The first opportunity was attending the 6th University Scholars Symposium Leadership Symposium in Hong Kong in 2015, and in July 2016 he participated in the Matariki Indigenous Student Mobility Programme at the University of Otago, New Zealand with four other Indigenous students from UWA. Horace also completed an Arts Practicum at the British Consulate in Perth.

Horace has applied for a graduate program in the public service and is particularly interested in Australia’s relations with its Asian neighbours and relationships worldwide. Although his degree specific major is Political Science and International Studies, he said he chose to study and intern in Indonesia to increase his learning about the Southeast Asian region. “Learning in class about organisations like ASEAN and its importance to the region has been fairly significant.”

Living in Indonesia since January this year, and now having completed his degree, Horace intends to further his knowledge and experience of Indonesia and has been successful in gaining a 6 week internship with the Australian Consulate-General at Makassar in Indonesia, commencing in July.
