Consistent feedback tells us that one of the most transformational experiences we can offer our students is the opportunity to travel and to apply their studies overseas.

The New Colombo Plan (NCP) is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region by supporting Australian undergraduates undertaking short term study, field trips, internships or research placements.

Funding for the program is ongoing and provides support for a flexible mobility grant program for short and longer term study as well as a prestigious scholarship program for overseas study of up to one year. Both programs prioritise opportunities for internships, mentorships, practicums, clinical placements and research.

The NCP is ultimately intended to deepen Australia's relationships in the region, both at the individual level and through expanding university, business and other stakeholder links.

Approximately $36 million in funding is available to support Single-term Mobility Projects and the first year of Multi-year Mobility Projects under the 2018 application round. This represents a substantial increase over the funds available in previous years.

Students participating in a Mobility Project must:

.               Be an Australian citizen.

.               Be undertaking a Bachelor Degree or an Honours Degree.

.               Generally be between 18 and 28 years of age at the commencement of their Mobility Project. In the case of groups some individual exceptions may be possible in this regard.

The 2018 application round will open on 20th March, 2017 and at this stage it is anticipated that the University's internal application deadline will be Friday 28th April . The 2018 application round is the ideal time to apply for a mobility grant! The funding allocated by the Commonwealth has substantially increased (in fact it has been doubled) so the chances of success are better than in any previous year.

Any applications which are judged to be acceptable for submission to the Department of  Foreign Affairs and Trade, but which are ultimately unsuccessful, will attract UWA funding through the Student Scholarship Travelling Fund so no 'quality' application can lose out.
