A current post-graduate student of The Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics has been selected to participate in the third Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) from August 23rd – August 28th 2015.

Melissa Lee is studying a Masters in Pure Mathematics and is one of five students in Australia, who has been provided funding to attend the Forum.

During this prestigious event, Melissa will join the winners of the esteemed Abel Prize, Fields Medal, Nevanlinna Prize, and ACM A.M Turing Award (considered the "Nobel" prizes in Mathematics and Computer Science) along with 200 young scientists and mathematicians worldwide.

HLF is hosting a multi-faceted discussion riveted on Big Data and resolving challenges produced by computational science.

The Hot Topic at the this year’s Forum, ‘Brave New Data World’, is broken down into presentations from leading authorities, moderated workshops and an open debate among the participants.

Melissa Lee said: “I am looking forward to participating in the HLF because it will give me the opportunity to meet many talented young researchers in computer science and mathematics from around the world and engage with outstanding mathematicians and computer scientists who have reached the top of their respective fields.

“I am excited to hear about their experiences and to gain inspiration from them as I start to look ahead to my own career in mathematics.”

Melissa Lee is supervised by Associate Professor John Bamberg and Associate Professor Michael Giudici.

Her research concerns coverings of lines of flock generalised quadrangles, and the groups associated with them. The association schemes that arise from these line covers are reasonably rare, and so are of great interest to people working in other fields of mathematics.
