Three Marketing students from the UWA Business School have taken out first place in the Australian Tax Office's 2013 video competition (tertiary category).

In their original video, titled " Super-the facts of life ," a mother explains to her teenage daughter the facts around superannuation-from the importance of supplying your tax file number, to choosing to consolidate multiple superannuation accounts and keeping track of your account online.

The winning team of Annabel Hennessy, Jotham Martins, and Madeleine Mazza, who are all enrolled in Associate Professor Fang Liu's Advertising and Promotion second-year unit, impressed the judges with their creativity.

"This video featuring an awkward conversation between mother and daughter about the importance of superannuation left our judges in stitches. The creative take Annabel, Jotham and Madeleine took on their entry is entertaining and engaging while providing valuable information about our super system," the ATO judging panel said.

Inspired by last year's winning team, also from the UWA Business School, Annabel, Jotham and Madeleine decided that the competition would be fun to enter.

"The idea kind of just came to us, however cliché that may sound. We were sitting in the Reid Library café brainstorming ideas. A lot of our initial ideas were probably too far-fetched, inappropriate or both. Then this idea just came to us and we stuck with it," Jotham explained.

"The best part was the actual filming and collaboration. We had heaps of fun doing it and would jump at the opportunity to do it again.

"We have learnt a lot from the experience, like how planning in advance really pays off, and how to make an advertisement humorous yet informative. The video was created on a tight schedule and zero budget, so that really pushed us to get creative about how to best showcase our ideas and work within our means. I think the most important thing I learnt is how important it is to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve.

"I loved working with both Annabel and Maddie, and couldn't think of better people to have done this with.

"We would all like to thank Fang (Dr Liu) for the opportunity and for her guidance along the way."

Annabel, Jotham and Madeleine received $1,700 worth of gift vouchers.
