UWA Accounting student Afini Jalil has gained a highly competitive Summer internship at oil and gas company Woodside.

Afini, who is in her second year of a Bachelor of Commerce , will spend her internship working on a real-life project, before delivering a final presentation to Woodside's senior accounting and finance professionals.

As part of the internship, she will also have the opportunity to collaborate with various departments across Woodside.

"I am very keen on the idea of being a part of Woodside's team and getting involved with challenging projects," Afini said.

"This internship will be the perfect platform to apply and put to practice the textual material that I have learnt throughout my course.  Most importantly, I am eager to learn as much as possible from the professionals at Woodside about oil and gas accounting."

Afini, whose family works in the oil and gas industry in Malaysia, says she has always dreamed of a career in the industry. This internship, she hopes, will equip her with the skills and experience to take the next step towards this career.

"I am certain that this internship will give me an international working exposure that will assist me to develop various soft skills such as leadership, interpersonal and teamwork which are essential in this highly competitive era," Afini said.

Afini decided to apply for Woodside's Accounting Summer Vacation Program after meeting the company's representatives at the 2013 Big Meet Career Fair. The three-stage process involved submitting an online application and completing a psychometric questionnaire, participating in a 30-minute telephone interview, and finally, sitting a 45-minute face-to-face interview at Woodside's offices.

Making use of the UWA Career Centre's resources, says Afini, helped her success.

"In preparation for the telephone interview, I thought about all the potential questions that might be asked by searching example questions online and making use of all the tips that I received from attending various UWA Career Centre events," Afini explained.

When she completes her degree at the end of 2014, Afini hopes to become an oil and gas accountant with a professional qualification from the Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia.

"I envision myself working internationally in a dynamic environment of the oil and gas industry," she says.

"As an international student, this internship program is a golden opportunity for me to be exposed to an international experience. I believe that it will give me an added advantage in preparing myself for the next stage of my life after university, and I would highly encourage all undergraduate students to do internships."
