Is there an international conference you would like to attend AND bring it to UWA in the future?
The Perth Convention Bureau (PCB) provides this opportunity every year for UWA staff. Submissions are now invited for the 2014 Aspire program, their Professional Development Award.
Each year two UWA staff each win a $5,000 award to take them to the conference of their choice where they can approach organisers with the idea of hosting a conference in Perth, with the assistance of the PCB.
Simply find a conference which you think could potentially be held here and present a brief case. The two best entries will win funding to help with travel, accommodation and registration.
This year's winners were Dr Celeste Rodriguez Louro , (Linguistics) and Dr Peter Merrotsy (Education).
Dr Rodriquez Louro will attend a socio-linguistics conference at the University of Illinois in May next year and hopes to arrange for a New Ways of Analyzing Variation meeting to be held here between 2019 and 2021. Dr Merrotsy will take part in a conference in Turkey and present a proposal for an International Research Association for Talent Development and Excellence conference in Perth in 2017.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson supports the Aspire program and encourages academic and professional staff to apply for the award.
The PCB has recently established a conference convener support desk at The University Club. At the Club entrance, it will be staff by the Bureau to support UWA staff and alumni to successfully bid for international conferences.
The Bureau's Chairman, Ian Laurance, said: "The convention results from the partnership between the PCB and UWA have been nothing short of spectacular. With this latest initiative we expect even greater dividends for the State."
