Australia's university students are being asked to voice their views on where the next generation should find its energy.

Global Energy Forums is a series of debates supported by Shell, and students are invited to share their ideas about where future global energy resources should come from by submitting a 1,000 word essay.

"This is a call to the future leaders of tomorrow to be active in the conversation about our future and a timely opportunity to discuss possible solutions to the world's energy supply challenges," said Andrew Smith , country chair of Shell Australia.

By 2050, the world's population could grow to nine billion people, up from about seven billion today, placing significant stress on energy and resources.

"If we are to meet those demands, we need innovative and fresh thinking which is why we are encouraging students to participate and we look forward to learning more about their ideas," Mr Smith said.

The competition is not limited to oil and gas students.  Anybody from any discipline who has ideas can enter the competition.

Four successful entrants from across Australia will be invited to present their papers and participate in a debate at Shell's Global Energy Forums in Perth, in the presence of key industry leaders and facilitated by Shell Australia.

The winning Australian university students will also receive a $1,500 Coles Group gift card.

Students can enter by sending their papers and details to [email protected] Entries close at 5pm AEST (3pm Perth time) on Friday 20 September 2013.
