No sooner had our new Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) arrived in WA than he had to pack his suitcase and join me on a flight to China.

Iain Watt - a former long-term Education Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Beijing - will lead UWA's internationalisation activity as we continue to build our global reputation as a world-class research university.

We met university and government representatives in four major Chinese cities to endorse our strong collaboration - and to foreshadow future  joint projects - in fields including medicine, oceanography, offshore foundation systems, plant genomics, dryland agriculture and water management.

We also met many UWA alumni in China and, in Beijing last Friday evening, other members of the Matariki Network of Universities - a select international group of universities which share ideas and expertise as well as a commitment to tackle global problems.

Although Iain has ‘hit the ground running', he officially takes up his new role on 10 June.  I hope you will make him welcome.

Vice-Chancellor
