A West Australian health expert who has made a substantial contribution to training Indigenous doctors over many years is the winner of an award from the Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME) Network, a project run by the Medical Deans of Australia and New Zealand.

Dr David Paul, Deputy Director of The University of Western Australia's Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (CAMDH), is the winner of this year's LIMELight Leadership Award.

Dr Paul first became involved in Aboriginal health in the 1970s as a medical student and continues to work towards improved health outcomes and quality health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

UWA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson said Dr Paul has driven change throughout the health and education sectors.

"Dr Paul and his colleagues have helped more than 20 Indigenous doctors and two Indigenous dentists to graduate from UWA," Professor Robson said.

"Whilst we have achieved a lot in terms of graduating Indigenous practitioners, we have achieved much more in terms of developing and implementing a substantial Indigenous health curriculum across the faculty so that all graduates are better prepared to work with Indigenous people and communities.  We are international leaders in this area."
