The Faculty of Life and Physical Sciences held its annual Prizegiving Ceremony on Wednesday May 25 in the Bayliss Building at The University of Western Australia.

Dean of the Faculties of Science, Winthrop Professor Tony O'Donnell welcomed students, their families and friends, university staff, prize donors and industry representatives, all of whom came together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the faculty's students and staff.

Following an address by guest speaker, Dr Erica Smyth, the Vice Dean, Winthrop Professor Brendan Waddell, announced the evening's prize recipients. The Faculty Medal was awarded to Rachel Paterson who also won the JA Wood Memorial Prize, the University's most prestigious undergraduate award for the best Honours graduate from the four engineering, science and medical faculties.

Before ending the evening's formalities the Dean launched a very special new award, the Chanelle Carter Memorial Fund - proudly sponsored by Alcoa of Australia to honour the memory of UWA graduate Chanelle Carter. The award aims to encourage disadvantaged female year 10 students from regional WA to pursue further studies in science.
